Enjoy the Violence

Enjoy the Violence
Once in a lifetime
I'm riding with Depeche
And my very naive teenage self

With the talk of unnecessary words
I consider the porosity of poetry
The ability to express
To turn a phrase
Protest

Make the world a better place

Unspoken words are like violence
And while I'd love to enjoy the silence
With you, the quiet is in/tense
Jubilant like your dreadful insults

Like the terror of going home to a demon

A ghoul gorging on misery
Thriving in the oppressive muteness
Licking tears from cheeks
With a vitriolic tongue

Scar/r/ed hearts are afraid to be heard
But you must speak — every word

Because everything angers the beast
They will find excuses to feast

Thank you, Kim and the dVerse team.

It’s a powerful and painful poem. It speaks to the importance of expressing our feelings, because keeping our words to ourselves can also cause harm. The image of the “demon” represents a presence that fuels fear, sadness, and silence. I find it a courageous call to break the cycle of silence and to use poetry as a form of protest and freedom.
