Automatic Reverence

Eight poems on structures that shape us and the beliefs that sustain them.

An empty classroom.

Systems do not examine themselves
They don’t question. They just function
When in doubt (if a System can doubt itself)
They lean into what they know
So it was and always so

Enshrined via cultural norms
Language and institutional memory
Deviation is dangerous
Systems are risk-averse

To those standing on the outside, questioning
Thinking they can come in and change things
You’re up against policies, incentives
And traditional best practices

Systems assimilate
Be prepared

Onboarding

Man standing with his back turned to the camera. hands folded behind his back.

Over and over and over
Failing fast at long-term planning
Vision started improvising

Who needs strategy, values, and a mission?
Didn’t they say improv fuels innovation?
Aren’t mistakes branded as iterations?

I’m gonna make a course
Call it The Art of Extemporization
Invite people to the full experience
A mountain retreat, at 10k a piece

No one will question my knowledge
I’m a CEO! With an almighty MBA
I’m a startup/tech bro, yo
That’s all you need to know

Repeated failure isn’t failing. It’s Trailblazing
It’s Disruption at the Speed of Infinite Velocity
It’s Unicorn Pivot Scaling Synergy
You lack the intelligence to know what I mean
All have envied my genius since I was thirteen

Take the course — Punch up to my level
I’ll teach you how to make millions
With buzzwords and caffeine
How to sell leadership
And outwork everyone, even after you’re dead

As for my real life — Everything’s in control
On track to scale. I just need more time
(and money) to land on my head
(In the Broverse, it’s all in reverse)

Improv is a curse! (that makes it a blessing in reverse)

Wisdom that Isn’t Wise

Someone delivering food on a motorbike. The delivery bag says "Grab" on the front.

Like Robber Barons of yesteryear
Silicon Sultans prevail

Gaslit by the gig economy
Nothing left but inequality
Hang onto that insecure thread
Work Precariats! Until you’re dead

In the broligarchy of crony capitalism
We widen the social schism

Rapaciously robbing from the poor
Retirement? No more

The Second Gilded Age

Empty upscale boardroom.

Abstain from temperance
Be gluttonous
Lust after success

Steal
Cheat
Pridefully repeat

Treat theft
As a self-serving charity

Lie when it serves
Be prudent with your words

Rationalize the truth
Make greed a food group

Code of Conduct

Crowd on stairs in a subway station perhaps.

Up at two AM
Insomnia strikes again

Listening to the AC
I think about humanity
Skeptical of our civility

With shepherds and dogs asleep
I try to count sheep

But wolves make it impossible

As I watch them fall off the cliff
I feel responsible

Sheep Wreck (Flock First)

Automatic Reverence

And yes, let’s compare suffering
Crown the supreme victims

Let’s dwell on ideologies
Holy righteousness and retribution too

And yes, let’s do some bible reading
Cherry-pick sections to justify interventions

Yes, let’s sacralize grievances
Forge our collective identity
With ultimate moral authority

The sensibility of:
Righteous indignation
Negative identity — requiring an enemy
Criticism as blasphemy, betrayal or treason

Yes!
Eye for eye
Don’t turn the cheek

Open wide
Use all your teeth

Bite down
Generations deep

Egregore

A poppy growing near a train track.

We lamprophonize systems
With our natural permanence
Epochs of upholding civilizations
Observing from a distance
We persist, after your existence

In addition to
War, deprivation
Abandonment
Our seeds carry
Biochemical memories

We endure without cultivation
Lacking manifestations of
Greed, dominance
Self-importance
