Eight poems featuring my circle of friends.

Party Animals
When the Pangolin plays the piano
Elephants try to dance
Tigers and Bears rip off their pants
All the Snakes are suddenly warm-blooded
Porcupine quills become gold-studded
Voyeuristic Pandas
Watch from branch verandas
While the Tortoise gets on the drums
The Shoebill Stork starts to strum
All the Wild Things turn off their phones
Nobody wants to go home
The jungle’s a predator-free zone

The Neon Blades of Xochimilco
Xochimilco (sow·chee·meel·kow)
Axolotl (ak·suh·laa·tl)
Mixcoatl (Meesh-KOH-ahtl)
Five axolotls limin’ in the lake
A carp came over and told them they looked weird
Said Axolotl One, who goes by Mixcoatl,
“Shut up your mouth. You look like a mosquito.”
Then, the tilapia, as invasive as the carp,
waved his fin and declared with a bark,
“We’re claiming Xochimilco …
Putting down stakes …
Get out of here with your ridiculous face.”
Little did the carp and tilapia know
The axolotls’ gills
Aren’t just for cheap thrills
Those gills transformed into bioluminescent blades
Sharp and shiny in the murky shade
The axolotls smirked, their fins aglow
Mixcoatl said, “You thought we’d roll over? Oh no, no, no.”
In military formation, they advanced with a chant,
“As above, not so below. Die foe.”
With flicks, and lashes, and blinding splashes
Blades flashed, fins slashed, water thrashed
The tilapias tried to run
For the carps, this takeover was no longer fun
Everyone got their heads spun
The lake ignited, neon red—
Light swirling
Blood whirling
With the invaders dead
The axolotls went back to chillin’
Before going off to bed

Picnic
The teddy bears are having a picnic
Would you like to come with
I have an extra ticket
We can dance and sing
Do the teddy bear swing
Among other things
Bears don’t put on airs
Unsquares
And when it’s time to eat
We’ll have salmon soufflé
Baked honeybee larvae
Venison with blackberries
Leaves and nuts from various trees
Stuffed
Before the end of the day
We will swim, climb trees
Rummage through garbage
Steal car keys – Maybe even …
Fly off to Belize
Ready to go?
I know you’re excited
Don’t forget your banjo

Grounded
In the deluge, a bee took refuge
Landing on my windowpane
Hello! I’ve never seen you before
will I see you again
I’ve stopped by momentarily
to get out of the storm. I’m
behind my quota
and along with the rain
the wind is not warm
Play a song while you wait
That! And your company
I’d appreciate! But …
Flight of the Bumblebee
would be most inappropriate

Eight
If you want to dance with me
Let’s meet at the jamboree
But first, stop by for tea
And while we’re enjoying a pint (of tea)
I’ll introduce you to my friend Phil
A bold jumping spider
with superior skill
who decided to live
with his girlfriend Jill
on my sunny windowsill
Although of the order Araneae
He considers himself a Primate
And interestingly, has convinced me
to let him be
the host of tonight’s festivities
Phil is his own quartet
Is he talented?
You bet!

How Well We Go Together
That’s me and my brother after a blind double date
With sisters who live across the lake
Our parents want us gone
Say we’ve been at home too long
What’s the problem
We don’t see nothin’ wrong
Still, they keep setting us up
for marriage
Imagine me and my brother
Pushing a baby carriage
(no thank you)
Dad says we need “Dutch courage”
(don’t know what that is)
We’d rather stay at home
eating rats with porridge
All these ladies
They leave much to desire
But over and over
We keep getting fired
There’s no chemistry in the air
No love at first glare
We proceed on four wings
And a prayer
These sisters were the worst
I must say
They laughed at us
One said we smelled like an astray
Or better yet, even decay
I chopped her in the throat
Stole her cloak
Left them broke
Me and my brother
We went outside for a smoke

A Day Out with Pigtopus
Minding our business at the dog park
A Dane mistook Pigtopus for a shark
Then everyone started to bark
Even the owners took part
Since I couldn’t get a word in
Pigtopus began to sing
🎶
I don’t resemble a shark dear
It seems inherently unfair
That only dogs can park here
🎶

Open Mic at the Beach
My spider friend Phil is pristine
The sexiest arachnid you’ve ever seen
I’ve known him since I was fifteen
Through a mutual friend, Wolverine
Last week we went to the club
Before, we met Goat Baby at the pub
Danced all night to ska and dub
Steppin’ hot at sunrise for grub
The next day we chilled at the beach
Goat Baby’s a poet too, preach
After I performed he gave me a speech
Your poetry’s extremely boring
So dull, Phil and I were snoring
For another career you should be exploring
