Although I sit on this couch every day
I never sit on it in the same way
I might reference the same books
In the same clothes, at the same time
But always some new spark I find
I might look around and feel grateful
And appreciate all that is mine
I might watch the kids' workout
Joining them secretly, mentally
Even though I know
Getting up to exercise is better for me
I might say a prayer
Thanking God for my creative gifts
While I create new wish lists
And so, to this couch, I say
Thank you for having me
Providing a space to think and compose
Watch TV, have a drink and suppose
Thank you for accepting me
When I'm tired and lazy
When I'm ready to write but
Waiting for a phrase, to phase me
And if someday I don't show up
Or you happen upon a new home
I'd bet my butt
We'd wish each other the best of luck
