Tuktu

the Peary caribou endemic to Canada.
Island hopping with the Peary caribou
We stopped on Cornwallis for Arctic willow stew
That didn’t warm me up; now I’m blue
Stuck to the ground, freezing through and through

Happy Canada Day! 🤗

~ Qausuittuq (pronounced Qow-su-ee-took): This is the traditional Inuktitut name for Cornwallis Island (and its main hamlet, Resolute). It translates beautifully to “The Place with No Dawn” or “Where the Sun Never Rises”, because it stays dark for three full months in the winter.

~ Tuktu (pronounced Took-too): This is the Inuktitut word for caribou.
