À Côté

À Côté

Me
You
Dinner for two
Your wife and girlfriends
Are here too

Taking up space
Like this menu
the table between us
With its white tablecloth
In this upscale restaurant

I accept them as part of the scenery
Dim lights and ambient noise
Like the wait staff ... and the
Occasional interruptions that annoy

Yes! The Smoked Beets
with Oyster Cream was delish
Same for the Grilled Fish
Looking forward to the
Blackberry Meringue
and the tarte au sucre

Getting back to the subject of us
Wife and girlfriends still on the menu
Less pleasant
than the food at this venue

Taking a short break from nihilism. Cue the romance. Well, it’s sorta romantic.

Sometimes, the annoyance can often be understood

      Oh, absolutely! 🙂
In the context of this poem, there are underlying issues between the couple, so although I am certain she understands the need for the interruptions, she not in the right state of mind to deal with them . She’s already sharing this man so the time she does have with him feels too precious to share with the servers too.
